Albertsons Community Partner Program - Our Council has received a second check from Albertsons for their Community Partners program.  $79.86 was given to us covering purchases in the 2nd quarter of 2011; and $71.80 for the 3rd quarter.  We now know that the system works and only need to increase our participation in the program.  We are not asking anyone to shop at Albertsons, but we are asking that you give Albertsons key tags to your relatives and friends (and enemies) that may shop there.  More information and key tags can be obtained from Paul Geissler (292-0130 or paulgeissler@cox.net).

A Note from Paul Geissler About a New Mentoring Program - The Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice (OJJ) is starting a Mentoring Program here in Baton Rouge.  Team Members will visit with juvenile offenders prior to their release and, after release, continue to assist the youth in their return to society.

A youth will be assigned to a team of mentors (typically 4 members) only if his parent or guardian agrees to support the team.  Youths will be paired with mentors in the same area.  After attending an initial 5-hour training session, team members are asked to volunteer a few hours a month for a year to the youth and family.  This is a great way to get involved in the lives of youths who really need our help.  We can end the revolving door and show kids crime is not the way.  There is a better way.  As someone at the session said “the first 10 days after youths are released will make or break them.”

I am hoping that we can form one team of St. Patrick parishioners.  If you are interested or if your want more information, please contact me at 292-0130 paulgeissler@cox.net.

A Council / Auxiliary Outing will be held the first Sunday in March - March 4 - to the LSU Museum of Art in the Shaw Center downtown on Lafayette St.  While there are several exhibits in the museum, the special exhibit entitled Tearing Granite will be of particular interest to our group.  And it is FREE - the free first Sunday in downtown Baton Rouge.  Our group can plan to meet downtown for lunch.  The museum tour will begin at 2:00 pm - meet at the reception desk of the museum.

Tearing Granite highlights the monumental and small scale granite sculptures by the artist Jesús Moroles. Moroles' sculptures take on qualities that are unexpected and atypical of stone: weightlessness, transparency and musicality. Moroles is internationally renowned as one of the greatest sculptors working with granite today. Through a unique process called tearing, Moroles transforms each block of hard stone into delicately refined sculptures that examine the connections between man and nature.

Tearing Granite provides visitors with an experience different than most museum exhibitions. Visitors are encouraged to touch, explore and even sit on some of Moroles' works. A giant chessboard set, made entirely of granite, commands the space of one gallery floor, inviting patrons to play a game. Other sculptures are meant to be stroked, producing a melodic sound.

LSU Baseball Outing - Plans are also underway for a Council activity to attend an LSU baseball game.  Stay tuned - more information coming...

From Your Field Agent:

The following is a message from our Executive Vice President Tom Smith...

Having been in the business for a long time, I have heard the arguments against buying permanent, cash value life insurance. For years, others— temporarily popular talking heads who make a name for themselves by dispensing bad advice — have tried to define whole life insurance. I bought my first whole life policy a long time ago, and what I hear, and what I see happening in my policy, are worlds apart.

For the record, there is nothing wrong with term insurance. We have a great term product that will provide coverage, for a limited term, at a very attractive price.

But the most popular myth these experts talk about is avoiding cash value (permanent) insurance, and “buying term and investing the difference” to achieve the same result. The theory is that you insure your life at a much lower premium cost (term insurance), take the difference between that premium and the higher whole life premium and invest it yourself. Some companies even have small funds they manage into which you can place that “difference.” Perhaps you know someone who has followed this advice and decided to “buy term and invest the difference.” I wonder how the difference is doing.

My guess is not so good. A couple of things could have happened.

First, most people never get around to investing the difference. Although it sounds good in theory, actually diverting that cash hardly ever happens.

There are lots of places for your money to go, and the “buy term and invest the difference” enthusiasm dies quickly. There are a few people who are actually disciplined enough to really invest the difference. And, if they are like most investors, it’s been a difficult ride. The “difference” isn’t making much of a difference.

I can tell you that every time I look at my whole life policy, it increases in value. It has a nice positive internal rate of return and, more importantly, will take care of my family if something should happen to me. Guaranteed. I decided to let the Knights of Columbus invest my difference for me, and it’s working out quite nicely.

You might want to do the same.

Call me today for a discussion about how permanent life insurance can help you sleep
well at night.
